Saturday, June 7, 2014, Chicago –  Jennifer Sanchez, a resident of Little Village on Chicago’s southwest side, graduated from the Greencorp Chicago Youth Program. Jennifer served as an intern for the North Lawndale Greening Committee and other communities from February to June.

Greencorps Youth is a collaboration between the Department of Family and Support Services, the Chicago Department of Transportation, and the Chicago Public Schools. The six-week training program provides high school students summer learning and workforce training in horticulture (landscaping, urban agriculture, tree care, ecological restoration) and cycling (safety, repair, and bike opportunities).

Jennifer was one of 120 students chosen to continue working throughout the school year in various internships. This particular internship  was underwritten by the Dime Child Foundation and her mentor was Emily Leidenfrost of WRD Environmentals. Annamaria Leon and Dr. Shemuel Israel were her instructors for two days a week in the North Lawndale Community.

Jennifer’s North Lawndale experiences included work on basic gardening, permaculture design,  ornamental garden design, and vermiculture. She also learned soil building and mineralization as well as plant health measurement with the refractometer.

Congratulations Jennifer on a job well done.
